• Calcium - ensures strong bones and teeth as well as the proper functioning of neuromuscular and cardiac function.

• Iron - is a component of a number of proteins, most importantly haemoglobin which transports oxygen to tissues throughout the body, in particular from the lungs to the muscles and other organs.

• Magnesium - aids in the body's absorption of calcium and also plays a key role in the strength and formation of bones and teeth. Magnesium is also vital for maintaining a healthy heart by stabilising heart rhythm and helping prevent abnormal blood clotting.

• Phosphorus - supplies the body with phosphate, and phosphate is a main component of bone structure. Phosphorus is necessary to maximise the benefits of calcium and can also help maintain the health of the kidneys and regulate fluid levels in the body.

• Potassium - helps to regulate blood pressure, to keep the right balance of water in fat and muscle tissues and ensures the proper functioning of cells.

Chiatah is gluten free. Gluten is a protein found in grains such as wheat, rye, barley. Some people cannot tolerate gluten when it comes in contact with the small intestine in a condition known as celiac disease.

Chia History

 

Chia seeds were first used as food as early as 3500 BC and were one of the main dietary components of the Aztecs and the Mayans. Chia seeds were eaten as a grain, drunk as a beverage when mixed with water, ground into flour, included in medicines, pressed for oil and used as a base for face and body paints.

 

The Spanish conquests of America destroyed much of the intensive agricultural production systems that were in place however small pockets of producing regions remained in Central and South America.

 

In the 1990s a research initiative was launched between a North American non profit organisation and a group of South American farmers with the goal of increasing and diversifying commercial production in the region. Chia was selected as part of the cropping program and growing trials proved successful. In the years that followed small scale, commercial production of Chia began.

 

The Chia Company first learned of Chia in 2000 following an American television documentary on grains that formed part of diets of ancient civilisations. The following year whilst in America on an international research expedition, one of our Directors, John Foss, took the opportunity to further investigate Chia. John was intrigued by the anecdotal evidence that a diet containing Chia had a positive impact on diabetes, cholesterol and obesity and the fact that Chia contained Omega 3 and a host of other nutritional benefits. After discussions with Australian food manufacturers, John imported Chia for them to use as a food ingredient.

 

Their response was overwhelmingly positive, however Chia was only available by import in small quantities and of varying quality. A consistent highly quality supply had to be available before Chia could be accepted in the Australian food industry. Growing trials proved exceptionally successful and The Chia Company began large scale production in Australia.





 

What is Chia?


The Chia plant (Salvia Hispanica) is an annual herb belonging to the mint family that grows approximately 1-1.2 metres tall. It grows from a seedling to develop lush, green foliage before it produce long flowers similar to lavender which are either purple or less commonly, white. These flowers develop into seed pods to produce Chia seeds.

 

What is Chiatah?


Chiatah is high quality, naturally grown Australian Chia seed. Chiatah seeds are small, oval shaped black or white seeds with a diameter of approximately 1 millimetre.

 

Chiatah seeds are oil seeds and are one of nature's richest sources of plant based Omega 3 and 6 essential fatty acids. What makes essential fatty acids so important? Your body can't produce them but needs them to maintain optimum health.

 

We like to think of them as tiny super seeds! Not only are they jam packed with essential fatty acids but Chiatah seeds are also rich in a stack of nutrients, vitamins, minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. Let's also not forget what they don't have they - virtually no sodium or sugar and absolutely no gluten.

Black & White Chiatah

 

'What's the difference between black and white seed?' This is the most common question we are asked about Chiatah.

 

The answer is simple. The ‘black' variety of Chiatah naturally contains a combination of black, grey and white seeds. The ‘white' Chiatah variety was formed by specially selecting white seeds from the black variety. We grow dedicated paddocks of black and white seed.

 

Aside from the obvious colour difference, the seed itself is virtually the same in all of its properties - size, taste and smell, with the exception of a few minor seasonal nutritional differences.

 

Variety is the spice of life! For the best of both of worlds we suggest you incorporate a combination of both black and white Chiatah.

 

How Do I Use Chiatah?

 

When it comes to incorporating Chiatah into your daily menu, the sky's the limit!

Chiatah is a fantastic way to enhance your daily diet with a bonus nutritious boost. Chiatah has a pleasant mild nutty taste and smell it can be added any food or beverage without altering the original flavour.

 

We just suggest a daily serve of 15 grams which is the equivalent of 1 level tablespoon.


Chiatah can be sprinkled over salads, cereals and muesli or incorporated into breads, muffins, slices, cookies or porridge.

 

Why not try Chiatah as a gel? When mixed with water (ratio - 1 tablespoon of Chiatah to 1 cup of water), Chiatah seed forms a unique nourishing gel that can be added to smoothies, juices, breakfast shakes, herbal teas, yogurts, soups, salad dressing or sauces.

Fats & Omega 3

Fats are the most concentrated form of energy for the body. There are three major types of naturally occurring fats – saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Chiatah is particularly rich in polyunsaturated fats – 'good fats' that contain essential nutrients like vitamins and minerals.

Two types of polyunsaturated fats Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) from the Omega 3 family and Linolenic Acid (LA) from the Omega 6 family are deemed essential fatty acids as they can’t be made by the body but are essential for human health.

Omega 3 ALA is especially important for a healthy heart and research has shown it can be beneficial for lowering cholesterol, maintaining artery function and reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease. The other function of ALA in the body is to be partially converted to other Omega 3 fatty acids - Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) which studies have shown can be beneficial for brain function, mood disorders and cardiovascular health.

Omega 6 LA is important for healthy skin and to be partially converted to Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) and Arachidonic Acid (AA) which research has shown can be beneficial for anti inflammation, joint mobility and heart function.

Dietary Fibre

Chiatah is a fantastic source of both soluble and insoluble dietary fibre. Soluble fibre is ‘soluble' in water. When mixed with water it forms a gel-like substance and swells. Soluble fibre has many benefits, including moderating blood glucose levels and lowering cholesterol.

Insoluble fibre does not absorb or dissolve in water. It passes through the digestive system in close to its original form.
